Physical Therapists (PTs) and Physical Therapy Assistants (PTAs), under the direction of a PT, work to restore and promote optimal strength and physical function for patients who have limitations, impairments or disabilities as the result of disease, disorders, conditions, or injuries.

As clinicians, PTs perform evaluations that include taking of patient history, conducting systems review, and performing tests and measurements to identify potential or existing problems. PTs restore, maintain, and promote optimal physical function, wellness, and quality of life using various modalities and techniques as allowed within their scope of practice.

PTs not only work toward restoring function, but also deal with managing pain, instructing patients and caregivers in transfers, ambulation, and home safety issues, and develop exercise and educational programs to promote future health and wellness.
